Luca Othman
Story
I’m taking part in the 2026 Herald Sun/Transurban Run for the Kids and making an extra contribution by raising funds for the Good Friday Appeal. I'll be running this for my 9 year old son Luca who lives with significant muscle challenges.
Luca's physical challenges started affecting him at around age 4. Although barely noticeable at the time the Royal Children's Hospital were persistent on finding what was causing Luca's strength issues and constant fatigue.
Luca's rare muscle disease makes everyday tasks really difficult. Running, jumping and squatting in particular are very hard for him and as he gets older the physical gap between him and his peers grows wider.
Luca's only form of treatment to try and combat the issues are physiotherapy and other muscle strengthening therapies which he engages in multiple times a week.
We are extremely lucky to have a great team behind us who work with Luca both on land and in the water to help him achieve his physical goals and maintain his strength levels. Thanks to these guys, we have seen Luca achieve some amazing things!
Amid all of his challenges, Luca is an intelligent, hard working and funny young man. He has a great sense of humor, loves animals and gardening and like lots of other boys his age - he loves gaming!
The Royal Children's Hospital helps us monitor his condition and work along side his team of supports to ensure he is receiving the best possible treatments he can.

The Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal (Good Friday Appeal) brings together people from all parts of the community to raise money for the benefit of The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. Funds raised support research, state-of-the-art equipment, education and training, and family centred care programs.
